“Am I being paid fairly?” It’s a question we’ve heard millions of our users ask, and to be honest, many of us have asked the question throughout our careers as well. In the past, it has been hard to know if you were being paid fairly or on par with industry norms. Now, it’s as easy as picking up your smartphone.
Using the Glassdoor Job Search App, you can find out if you are paid fairly thanks to the tool “Know Your Worth”. Use the “Know Your Worth” tool to reveal how your market value has trended over time; how your market value compares to typical workers in the same field; and also plot your current base pay.
The tool is designed to not only help you determine if you are being paid fairly, but also whether you should attempt to negotiate your current salary and/or explore better-paying jobs.
In just a few clicks you can:
• See salary and compensation by company, job title and location
• Research averages and ranges for base salaries, bonuses, stock options and more
• Read about what benefits are offered and what employees think about them
With Equal Pay Day coming and performance review season just around the corner, it’s more important than ever to be informed and knowledgeable before having salary conversations. Once you’ve used Know Your Worth on the Glassdoor Job Search App, here are a few tips for navigating performance reviews with a raise or promotion in mind:
1. Feel out the right time to ask for a raise.
Look for cues from your manager and/or department head to determine whether or not salary increase discussions or bonuses will be part of the formal evaluation.
2. Come prepared.
You should always prepare an agenda to send at least two days in advance of the meeting to see if your manager wants to add anything. You’ll also want to know your talking points… big wins, quantitative figures, anecdotal support, and your Know Your Worth statement.
3. Craft a compelling narrative
“Now is the time to prove and show you deserve a raise. There is a big difference,” Viviano says. “Come to your performance review with a clear understanding of your accomplishments and how they’ve provided results for the company. Then when it comes for you to speak during your review, talk about the things you’ve accomplished that you’d like to highlight.”
Once you’ve proven your value, you can talk about why you deserve a raise.
4. Know what’s important to you.
Our research shows that Compensation & Benefits comes in fifth on a list of what drives employee satisfaction. What’s #1? Culture and Values. What’s most important to you? Is it flexibility? Great people? A fast paced exciting environment? Know what’s important to you. While salary is a good starting point, negotiations can and should be about more than just salary.
Negotiating for some of these perks will help you to get the complete salary and benefits package you need:
- Childcare
- Health + Fitness
- Workplace + Time Flexibility
- University Tuition Reimbursement
- Training, Professional Development + Certifications
- Mentoring + Coaching
