Online directories (often referred to as ‘citation sites’) are crucial for local search optimization, and our recent research shows that consumers lose trust in businesses with inaccurate business listings. But which online business directories and citation sites are the best? The citation lists below are the outcome of a huge project to compile the most comprehensive list of niche citation sites available on the internet.
Focusing on the top citation sites by business category, this resource was originally published in 2014 but has now been refreshed for 2017, thanks to countless man-hours from our in-house citation team, as well as valuable feedback and new site suggestions we’ve had from you in that time — so thanks for all your comments!
What follows is an updated list of over 1,000 niche citation sites for 40+ business categories.
How we identified 1,000+ Citation Sites
Using a variety of sources (including our own local citation databases, manual research, existing resources, etc.) we compiled a pool of over 10,000 possible business listing sites. We manually reviewed each of these sites and filtered them down to the top 20-40 citations per business category.
Filter steps:
- Is it a niche directories / citation site? (If no, then discard – so no yelp.com here.)
- Is there a clear ‘Add Listing’ option? (If no, then discard.)
- Does the site operate in one of USA / CAN / UK / AUS (If no, then discard.)
- Does the site have a Domain Authority of 10+? (If no, then discard.)
Categorization steps:
- What business category does it cater to?
- What is the Domain Authority of the site?
- Does it offer a Free or Paid Listing (or in some cases Reciprocal)?
- What is the listing page URL?
